Mike Hoffman gave us a short tutorial on pruning for his vineyard;  he already cut off the bulk of the canes, so we just had to go through and make sure the shoots off of the main <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canopy_%28grape%29\">cordon<\/a> were spaced right, then trim each shoot so that there were 2 buds per spur and one shoot at each site, like so:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1278\" title=\"Pruned syrah vines at Live Oak Vineyard\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0020.JPG\" alt=\"Pruned syrah vines at Live Oak Vineyard\" width=\"438\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was a completely beautiful, sunny, warm day, perfect for pruning.\u00a0 There were 4 of us total, and we finished in just over an hour.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1284 alignright\" style=\"margin: 3px;\" title=\"IMG_0023\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0023.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_0023\" width=\"273\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"http:\/\/docker.vsl:8080\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0023.JPG 2048w, http:\/\/docker.vsl:8080\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0023-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/docker.vsl:8080\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0023-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1285\" style=\"margin: 3px;\" title=\"IMG_0024\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0024.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_0024\" width=\"399\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"http:\/\/docker.vsl:8080\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0024.JPG 2048w, http:\/\/docker.vsl:8080\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0024-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/docker.vsl:8080\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0024-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We celebrated our pruning success with some wine tasting and snacks.\u00a0 We tasted Mike&#8217;s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Primitivo from Temecula.\u00a0 Two very different wines, but great in their own way.\u00a0 The Cab was very fruit-forward and elegant, whereas the Primitivo hit you with aromas of milk chocolate and flavors of ripe red fruit and cola &#8212; definitely a great summer barbecue wine.\u00a0 I also brought a little sample of the syrah that we picked <a href=\"\/index.php\/2009\/09\/05\/syrah-harvest\/\">last fall<\/a>;  when I recently <a href=\"\/index.php\/2010\/02\/01\/wine-update-syrah-taste-and-giving-up-on-ps-sludge\/\">tasted it<\/a>, I thought it was a little syrupy and harsh.\u00a0 I took the sample out yesterday, so it got O2 exposure overnight; this seemed to make all the difference!\u00a0 It was very smooth, big, jammy, fruit-forward flavors with good pepper and spice.\u00a0 Very yummy!\u00a0 It will be great, but needs some time to mature.\u00a0 But, most big reds do!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1279\" title=\"IMG_0025\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/IMG_0025.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_0025\" width=\"401\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p><script src=\"http:\/\/www.stumbleupon.com\/hostedbadge.php?s=5\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of the east coast is blanketed in snow today.\u00a0 Meanwhile, we finally got our southern California sunshine back &#8212; just in time to prune the syrah vines at Live Oak Vineyard.
