While I was waiting for the wine to do what it needed to do, I realized I needed to make some labels. I figured I would be making more wine in the future, and so I wanted to have a cellar name and a theme for my wines. I initially considered an animal mascot theme, but then I was listening to a podcast that was railing on how many wines anymore had stupid animals on them. OK, forget the animals. I wanted something colorful and fun, and I wanted it to be something original and personal. Eventually I decided to use the “California Claassen” label name, which comes from our distinction in my husband’s family as the California Claassens. Then I decided to use areas around San Diego, where we live, to designate each wine. I picked out a picture related to our neighborhood and designed the label with good ol’ photoshop. Then I printed the labels from powerpoint onto label paper that already had a gummed backing that just needed to be wetted before applying to the bottle. I sprayed them with an art fixative, because I thought the ink might run otherwise; we found out later this was important, because my hubby subsequently made labels for some beer he bottled, and did not spray them, and the ink ran so bad he had to remake and relabel the bottles. The really fun part was having to cut out all of those labels, oh such fun.
